Hooley delight for SKAAC

July 17, 2018 by Peter McGarry Leave a Comment

Grab yourself a coffee this could take a while..

To start with an understatement, there were plenty of highlights at the Hooley Relays on 14/7/2018, Bastille Day to be precise, and SKAAC did the conquering it’s fair to say.

Firstly the SKAAC Day started at 2:30am (4:30am Christchurch time) for Kelsey Berryman to catch a plane to Melbourne to act as recorder for the Mens Div 1 team, Ooooohhh and to watch Brad a little bit as well too.

Arguably the best day possible greated all that woke on this day, 14-15 degrees with great sunshine and near still conditions…The Hooley was on and SKAAC were ready.

30 athletes, 6 Mens teams and 2 Female teams would be, if not our largest ever contingent, certainly our largest in 30 years.

A great profile of athletes would wear the famous SKAAC colours. Brothers (Thomas & Samuel Scroggie and Harry & Jack Bowen), Brother & Sister combination (Josh & Isabelle Collins) Housemates (Tristan Mioni/Liv Mitchell/Maddie Tricarico) past SKC Cross Country Captains (Simon Field, Brosie McCann, Ned O’Brien, Joe Lynch) Current SKC Cross Country Captain (Will Lewis), National Level Decathletes (Dan Bailey) Current SKC Coaches (Steve Fabris, Jeremy Weeks) and Mother & Sons & Brothers (Chloe Cornwell, Gabe, John & Charlie) and we can also claim a Father & Son (with Andrew and Angus Down, Andrew competing with Old Brighton) and our Commonwealth Games Finalist (Brad Mathas).

The Mens Div 1 Team, was on paper a very strong team, but would be facing a stern test from Old Welsey, Old Xavs & Scotch. In a blistering start Steve Knuckey (8:50, Old Wesley) would lead home Brad Mathas (8:56) to hand a 6 second lead for Will Lewis to chase down one of the better athletes in the state in Lachlan Aspinall, Will Lewis (9:31) was sensational to hand over to Simon Field with Old Wesley in sight. Fieldy is a legend, warm-up with a kick-of-the-footy with his son Josh and then to business. Belting out a 9:42 leg and putting SKAAC into a narrow lead of 14 seconds, before the handover to Matthew Hussey. Matt would extend the lead to 20 seconds before Brad would attack again, running nearly the same time (8:57) the race was SKAAC’s for the keeping. Will Lewis attacked hard and was rewarded with 9:26 with Fieldy (9:46) and Matt a big drop running 9:33. In a gripping race where Old Wesley were always within striking distance, it was a great effort to get the win against such strong opposition. The final margin of 47 seconds over 24km was pretty slim indeed.

If you thought that would be hard to top, then the performance of the Women’s team did!! Our first ever female win at the Hooley, with two outstanding juniors leading the way, along with super recruit Maddie Tricarico. The fact that every member of the winning Women’s team has had their first APSOC run this season is testament to the work of Tristan Mioni and Sam Doble, the SKAAC Winter Team Managers.

In a fantastic piece of trivia, the Women’s team actually beat the SKAAC Mens team over the finish line. (Total time 73:56 versus 75:41 for the men)

However, back to the racing, where it too would be Old Wesley, along with the traditional powerhouse of Old Xavs proving the worthiest of opponents. Isabelle Collins, on her APSOC debut, would lead off in 12:11, to just trail in behind Old Xavs. Handing over to Maddie for the second leg, knowing that multiple APSOC race winner Anna Kasapis was in hot pursuit would not phase Maddie, returning to hand over to Milla in a super slick 12:14. we were 27 second behind Old Wesley and 10 seconds in front of OX, before Milla took to the course. What followed was spectacular, Milla eroding Old Wesley’s lead and establishing one for SKAAC to the tune of 27 seconds Old Wesley, with Old Xavs trailing by 58 seconds. The team was starting to believe what could be possible, with careful attention paid to “between leg” recovery and preparation to “do it all again”. Isabelle flew around the curcuit a second time in 12:07, maintaining a lead before handing to Maddie for a brilliant leg (12:42) against Old Wesley’s ace who would mount a final assault in the 5th leg. It was going to be a head-to-head race over the final leg, with nothing separating the clubs at the final change. Milla, displaying tactical nous beyond her years would run a near faultless leg (12:22) to lead the SKAAC Women to their first ever win at the Hooley. The final margin 54 seconds to Old Wesley in second and 1:49 to Old Xavs. The photo left, is the history making team, post race and with the spoils of victory.

A hallmark of the Women’s effort this year has been the passion of Olivia Mitchell. Not only an energiser for the entire club, Liv is also running out of her skin. A comparison of her running last year v’s this year at the same race…2018 (12:41/12:54) versus (13:55/14:26) a staggering improvement in 1 year!! Chloe Cornwell, recounting the 18 odd years since the last time SKAAC won a Women’s teams event, was sensational running for 2.5 hours in the morning and then again at the Hooley finishing in 14:47/15:11. Rounding out the team was another boom recruit, Camille Hudson with 13:01/13:17 showing her prowess.

The feeling at the event was brilliant, matching the weather, with students, older runners, all enjoying the concept presented by the Hooley Relay. You didn’t need to go far on the day to see another club mate either on the track or warming up or down to feel right at home.

There were some other notable performances, Jeremy Weeks running 9:46/9:55 to show just how fit he is at present. Ned O’Brien, fresh from his medal at Sandown 10:32/10:46. Coach Fab 10:14/10:32 and Thomas Scroggie 9:59/9:56, with the banter before the line between Fab & Thomas a highlight as their teams changed at the same time!!

Rising star Luca DiConza ran brilliantly to record 9:48/9:52, along with Harry Bowen 10:30/10:16.

Josh Collins, a really important member of the SKC team ran his first run since a trip to Greece ran 10:05/10:01.

Out star decathlete Dan Bailey also faced the starter, stopping the clock at 11:43/11:58.

Great to see Samuel Scroggie out there too, following a frustrating summer with injury running 12:44/13:03, similar for Angus Down following an arm injury 12:07/12:11. Year 9 student Ryan Marcina ran fantastically well across his two legs as well for a 11:10/11:31 return. Lincoln Mah, who ran the Gold Coast Marathon recently in PB time, ran 12:59/11:54, the last leg important as he guided Milla home in her finish to the line in the Women’s race.

JD Lynch is a SKAAC legend and it is always great to see him out racing at his normal high standard. An 11:38/11:58 day shows how well he backed up from Sandown the week before.

Our fearless winter Captains Mioni (12:58/12:37) and Doble (13:06/13:24) also let their feet do the talking, despite organising us all brilliantly on the day. SKC student Seamus Taylor 14:27/14/28 would impress many with his consistency and finishing burst to the line.

It’s never happened before, but it’s getting close. And I’ll back the Cornwell’s to get it done. That is, to race an entire APSOC race as a family. Gabe/John/Charlie would all make up a team with Jack Bowen and finish in front of nearly a dozen clubs. With mum Chloe running, you could say it was “nearly” done, but come on James, how about a comeback 🙂

In a day that will be remembered for many years, for many reasons, it is hard to not go past the fantastic environment created for athletes of all ages, genders and abilities to “get out there and have some fun”. A truly great SKAAC day.

Thanks to all who made it possible, parents driving athletes to Wantirna, volunteers to record team sheets and team managers to get the teams together, for without you, the memories we all have would not have eventuated.

Sandown Wrap – Up…Silver for Under 20 Men

July 7, 2018 by Peter McGarry Leave a Comment

A fantastic day of Cross Country Road Racing was completed at Sandown Racecourse, with SKAAC having15 athletes face the starter, the most ever for SKAAC. With the course reduced to 3.1km for all Divisions due to extreme weather, there were some very happy and others not so happy. The Under 20 Men also created double history, not only being our first ever Under 20 Mens team, but also securing a famous Silver medal in the process!! Picture Left-Right Tristan Day, Callum Day, Ned O’Brien with the silver bling.

I would like to start by thanking the huge contingent of officials that made today possible for SKAAC for without them we wouldn’t have had the success we did.

  • * Monique Newell (Mens Open recorder)
  • * Anne Howard (Mens Under 20 recorder)
  • * Danielle Gleeson (Womens Under 18 recorder)

  • The 40+ Mens Team of Dino Imbriano (11:54), Andrew Thomas (13:28) & Joe Lynch (12:05) finished in 7th place.
  • The Under 14 Mens had 2 teams entered for the first time in the club’s history with 3 debutants out of our 5 runners!!

  • The Under 18 Womens team of Milla Gleeson and Lulu Goodman also had a great race, with Milla stepping under 4min/k pace for the first time ever and Lulu also posting a sensational time.

History made for SKAAC at the Williamson

June 23, 2018 by Peter McGarry 1 Comment

In a historic result, the SKAAC Women’s team have won the APSOC Williamson teams event for the first time since the race inception for Women in 1999. This is only SKAAC’s second ever Women’s Team event win in APSOC following a win at the Jamieson in 2000. So to say it’s been a while is an understatement. A winning team member from today, Milla Gleeson, wasn’t even born in 2000!!

The team was headlined by race winner Karen Thorp 18:07, and Milla Gleeson 20:39 who won the Under 23 Women’s section. Madeleine Tricarico finished 4th in 20:38 and Olivia Mitchell secured the famous win with her 10th place finish in 21:53.

Make no mistake – this is a MASSIVE result for the club and for the team that did us all so proud. Well done Karen, Maddi, Milla and Liv!!

Please see the photo to the left with the spoils of victory. L-R Olivia Mitchell, Madeleine Tricarico & Karen Thorp. Absent Milla Gleeson

In the Mens Race it was two junior STARS that lead the way for SKAAC in our 3rd place finish. Year 9 Luca DiConza, fresh from his Bronze medal at All Schools last week came 9th in 16:18 and Year 8 Harry Bowen also picking up Bronze last week finishing 18th in 17:04. These two are great young men and are sure to delight the SKAAC faithful in the years to come. Not to be outdone, 2017 SKC Captain of Cross Country Ned O’Brien finished 24th in 17:56, Karen had a “double contributing day” slotting into 26th overall, with ageless warriors Lincoln Mah 34th 19:00 and Joe Lynch 39th 19:38 making up the Div 1 team.

Our Div 2 team contained the balance of the winning female team and club debutant Thomas Weereratne 52nd in 20:38, Matt Lynch 20:01 and SKC TIC of Cross Country Brosie McCann 21:48. Great also to see SKAAC Cross Country Team Manager Tristan Mioni out continuing his recovery from shoulder surgery running the 5km course in 22:05.

All in all a FANTASTIC day for SKAAC and a history making win for our Women’s team.

Bol & Deng light up Stockholm

June 11, 2018 by Peter McGarry Leave a Comment

In an amazing result for Peter Bol and Joseph Deng, they have ensured a SKAAC quinella in a Diamond League race in the 800m in Stockholm on Saturday night. Peter running 1:44.56, becoming the 6th Australian under 1:45 and Joseph Deng running 1:44.61 his second PB in 7 days. What a coaching performance for Justin Rinaldi, who now has coached 3 of the 6 Australian’s that have gone sub 1:45 over 800m.

Peter has endured a tough 12-18 months and had an 18 hour flight from the USA to Sweden after his place in the race was not confirmed until Wednesday night US time. His bags also didn’t make it to Sweden with him, forcing him to buy some spikes specifically for the race. What a great day to announce yourself on the world stage, Pete!!

Joseph Deng was all the rage following last weeks’ slashing run in Hengelo and ran another fantastic race, another PB inside 7 days and now moves on to the 800m at the Paris Diamond League in 2 weeks time.

While on the subject of Justin Rinaldi, he can now claim a Diamond League trifecta, with Van Rensberg from South Africa, who Justin coaches via correspondence finishing in 3rd place rounding out a very famous day for Justin, Peter, Joseph and SKAAC.

Dyson Relay – Wrap up

May 15, 2018 by Peter McGarry Leave a Comment

wwIn a race that stretches back to 1939, and one that St. Kevin’s had won only 6 times (1986, 1987, 1991, 1994, 1995 and 2017), it was with great expectations that our strongest Mens team for the season could bring home our 7th win in the Dyson Relay and back up last season’s triumph. If you were in any doubt how hard The Dyson Relay is to win, or the quality of athletes that contest the famous Tan circuit, the 2018 fastest time set by Old Xaverian, Matthew Clarke at 10:45 is the 9th fastest time ever around the circuit and the 4th fastest ever by an Australian!!

With this blistering run in the lead off leg SKAAC’s Joseph Deng stopped the clock at a sizzling 11:05, the 4th fastest ever for SKAAC and a massive PB for Joseph and an Under 20 SKAAC Club record. Peter Bol having his first hit out since overcoming injury stopped the clock at 11:35, handing to Brad Mathas who despite going very hard early finishing with 11:43. Rising star 18 y.o. Callum Day ran 4th leg in 12:27 followed by club legends Xavier Chapman 12:09 and Jack Holden 11:28 (only a fraction outside his PB) bringing home a famous win for SKAAC, our 7th in The Dyson.

Karen Thorp ran SKAAC’s 4th fastest ever Women’s time (13:49) around the Tan, combining with Milla Gleeson 16:28, an Under 16-Under 20 SKAAC Club record for The Tan, and Liv Mitchell (16:34 PB) and Trish Doble 18:14 helping the Women’s team to 5th place.

Plenty of other great highlights were the APSOC debuts for Ben & Tom Forster amazingly both running the same time of 14:19, and both now sharing the Under 13 SKAAC Club record.

The future was also on display with over 15 Under 20 athletes wearing the famous SKAAC colours. Matt Lynch (14:10), Pat Gigacz (14:58), Lochie McKay (14:50). Keeping the regeneration theme going, it was also great to see an Under 14 team get together with Joel Imbriano 15:14, Ben Forster 14:19, Glen Imbriano 21:12, John Cornwell 16:01, Gabe Cornwell 17:02 and Huw Warillow on debut running 17:43. Charlie Cornwell also ran a great 19:13

The vets had a great day as well, with Luke Goodman the standout securing the fastest time in the 50+ Age group (13:50), and 40+ athletes, Gerard Large (13:45) and Dino Imbriano (14:22) competing strongly in the #2 team.

A great day for SKAAC with 30 athletes facing the starter for the famous Dyson Relay, club records galore and the race win to the Mens Div 1 team.

All Schools Road Relays – plenty of SKAAC athletes in action – Tristan Day fastest overall !!

May 12, 2018 by Peter McGarry Leave a Comment

A fantastic day for SKAAC athletes at the Victorian All Schools Road relays held at Princes Park in Carlton around a 2km/3km course.

A huge contingent of our female members representing Sacre Coeur and St Catherine’s had some very strong performances. the 4th place finish for the Sacre Coeur Under 20 team contained SKAAC members Isabelle Collins 11:50, Georgia Durham 11:43 & Ava Bennett 12:41.

Also running for Sacre Coeur in the Under 16 group was Lulu Goodman who ran 9:21 for the 2km course. Isabella McDonald (St. Catherine’s) competed in the Under 18 age group and ran 13:48 for 3km showing the benefit of recent training with Liz Mathews and Steve Fabris at Tooronga.

A highlight for the day was the team gold medal secured by Tristan Day’s Trinity Grammar team and Tristan securing the fastest time in the Under 20 Men running a slashing 9:10.

Closely following the Trinity team were SKC with the team of Matthew Hussey 9:31, Josh Collins 9:40, Thomas Scroggie 9:54; Will Lewis 9:25 taking the Silver medal.

The SKC Under 16 team of (Harry Bowen 6:49, Ryan Marcina 7:24, John Cornwell 8:24, Luca Di Conza 7:54) finished 8th and CMLAC dual SKAAC members Sam Mazzei 8:44 & Max King 7:59 ran in the Under 14 Mens age group.

A fantastic day of running by the many SKAAC athletes in the All Schools.

XCR Round 1 Wrap-up – Jells Park

April 22, 2018 by Peter McGarry Leave a Comment

A brilliant re-entry to AV Cross Country Running (XCR) at Jells Park on 21st April 2018. Brilliant sunshine, and a dry course greeted the 14 SKAAC history makers for the first Round of the season.

SKAAC had 4 debutants, Milla Gleeson, Isabella McDonald, Xavier McDonald and Tom Forster. We also had 4 teams, surely the most ever for SKAAC and our first ever Female and Junior male XCR teams in the club’s history.

Picture left…Xavier McDonald in action.

The top Mens Team, running in Division 4 were winners on the day with Adam Pyke (18:26) Jack Holden (18:28) Steve Knuckey (19:02) Alex Rowe (21:25) and Callum Day (20:06). This group of fine athletes were clear of the impressive VCCL team by nearly 3 minutes. Special mention to Jack Holden, who for the first time wore the SKAAC singlet in an XCR race after many many seasons competing in AV Cross Country.

I will also take the opportunity to single out Callum Day, an Under 20 athlete, the club’s Most Improved athlete from 2017/2018, who was fantastic making his first appearance in an Open SKAAC team.

The Under 18 Women’s team made history by being the first ever female XCR team, and didn’t they do us proud!! Milla Gleeson (12:30), Lulu Goodman (14:15) and Isabella McDonald (15:13) took to the course like seasoned professionals. Tellingly, each of these fine athletes is eligible for this same age group next year.

Milla Gleeson (centre) about to face the starter as the first runner in the Women’s Under 18 race.

The Under 14 Mens team showed so much enthusiasm that the SKAAC tent that was in action near the start-finish line, was a buzz of excitement both before and after the race. To have a team, all bottom age, finish in 5th place at their first ever attempt is an amazing result. The team of Xavier McDonald (11:24), Joel Imbriano (12:10) and Tom Forster (10:57, the 6th fastest run for any Under 14 male on the day) ran brilliantly and had a fantastic time tackling the course and having their first XCR race for St. Kevin’s that the future looks very bright indeed for this talented group.

The Mens 40+ also faced the XCR starter for the first time in SKAAC’s history, the Team of Dino Imbriano (25:31), Lincoln Mah (24:05) and Andrew Thomas (31:20) finished in 12th place. A super tough effort by Andrew Thomas to finish his run, after suffering a calf injury during the race.

All in all – an undisputed success for SKAAC. We look forward to Round 2 at St. Anne’s Winery on 5th May 2018, where the Open Men will tackle an 8km course.

A famous night for Luke, Brad & Joseph on the Gold Coast

April 13, 2018 by Peter McGarry Leave a Comment

If that wasn’t the best night ever of SKAAC athletics, then consider yourself challenged to find a better night for the club!
3rd, 5th & 7th for Luke Mathews, Brad Mathas and Joseph Deng has stamped SKAAC as a leading club in the Commonwealth for middle distance running.
Luke Mathews in securing a famous Bronze medal, becomes SKAAC’s first ever international Track & Field medalist in a race that is sure to transcend the generations. Running on pace from the gun with Botswana’s Nijel Amos, Luke was set to launch with 250 to go, however the Kenyans had other ideas, quickly breaking the race open with a burst that would prove pivotal. Luke, 6th with 75m to run, found something that so few athletes have been able to find when all seems lost. Was it the home crowd, was it the expert coaching of Luke’s mum Liz, was it the entire St. Kevin’s community willing him home, was it Luke’s family and mates in the crowd or was it Luke’s super competitive race sense? In this scribes view, I think in 1:45.60 we saw all of these traits in spades as Luke stormed home, when all looked lost for a famous Bronze medal.

Brad Mathas ran out of his skin at these Commonwealth Games. Running two PB’s in 3 days at an International meet of the Commonwealth games 800m standard is a huge achievement and a great testament to the sacrifices that Brad has made in the last 18 months in moving to Australia from Christchurch, to join SKAAC’s legendary coach Justin Rinaldi paying huge dividends that the athletics world now knows about. A 1:46.32 Heat run and a 5th place in a major International Final in a PB time of 1:46.07 are just reward for Brad, his family and partner Kelsey Berryman, also an elite athlete in her own right.

What more can be said of 19 year-old Joseph Deng? Well plenty. Making similar sacrifices to Brad, in moving from Brisbane nearly straight out of finishing Year 12 at Ipswich Grammar, Joseph announced himself at the 2018 National Championships winning the B-Final in a leading time of 1:45.71 and not without controversey, was selected to run for his country. Justifying selectors faith, he produced a huge effort in his Heat to be a mere 0.01 seconds outside his PB to make the final. He’s made of stern stuff, Joseph. With an quad injury sustained in late March very far from the ideal preparation for your Games debut, we heard no excuses, we just saw action on the track, just the way we like it at SKAAC. To hear during the Channel 7 coverage, Lord Sebastian Coe laud Joseph as a most exciting prospect was quite remarkable to hear from the IAAF President.

What a night of Australian athletics we had the priviledge to witness, especially when the night contained such a large contingent of SKAAC Legends. A huge congratulations to Luke, Brad & Joseph for all the joy they have provided us this week. Well Done lads.
