SKAAC’s first Olympian – Luke Mathews A-Qualifier at Lakeside

March 6, 2016 by Peter McGarry Leave a Comment

There are sometimes in our sport where moments are defined and remembered for the magnitude of the achievement. And so it was on Saturday night when “Australia’s up-and-coming” middle distance talent, Luke Mathews claimed an 800m PB and importantly an A-Qualifier for the Rio Olympic Games in August in running a great race in 1:45.16 in finishing a strong second behind Olympic Champion and World Record Holder, David Rudisha a the Melbourne World Challenge.

There were plenty of SKAAC members on hand at Lakeside Stadium to support our three 800m starters at the Melbourne World Track challenge. Alex Rowe having his second race for the season finished 5th in 1:47.48 showing solid improvement from his 1:48.39 in Adelaide. Peter Bol running a brave race in the famous SKAAC colours, was on the pace for the first lap and three-quarters finished in 1:49.22. The 800m at the Nationals in Sydney in a few weeks will no doubt be one of the great races for athletics purists.

In the final race for the night was Sam McEntee in the 5000m. Has there been anyone in Australian Athletics in recent memory that has performed at such a high level, as Sam has on the 2016 Australian Circuit, with little or no fanfare? Well judging by his 13:33.73 on Saturday night (9 seconds quicker than his run at the Briggs Classic in Hobart) this is about to change and change quickly. He is well set, has some great Australian competition striving for the A-qualifier of 13:24.00, and certainly the top end speed as evidenced by his super run in the Victorian mile championship to be a chance to join Luke on the plane to Rio.

Get excited as in Luke Mathews, the club has it’s first ever Olympic qualified athlete and still plenty more chances for our other elite athletes to join him.

Go SKAAC.

Luke Mathews & Sam McEntee dominate the Victorian Mile Championship

February 23, 2016 by Peter McGarry Leave a Comment

Never once in the 70+ years history of the club, and then twice in the same race. That is the summary of an extraordinary night of racing at the Miler’s Club meet held at Melbourne University Track on 23 February 2016.

There is something mystical about the mile, that had the potential to be lost in the move to the metric system in 1966, but coveted so dearly by those who love athletics still, especially when an athlete is able to break the 4:00.00 minute barrier.

Until last night no SKAAC athlete had been able to break that magical 4:00.00 minute barrier. We certainly have had the talent to achieve the feat in years past, but with the distance sadly raced so sparingly, Simon Lewin’s 4:02.XX had stood for nearly 18 years exactly as the club’s fastest ever mile.

SKAAC’s Luke Mathews and Sam McEntee, both wearing the famous SKAAC colours, staged an intriguing battle with the Victorian Mile title going to Luke Mathews in an incredible 3:56.7, with Sam second in 3:59.0. To have a quinella in such a big race is just reward for Luke and Sam and the training they have completed over the last 12 months and also to their coach Nick Bideau. Credit also to Deakin’s Brenton Rowe for also dipping under the 4:00.00 barrier in placing 3rd.

Luke and Sam are in sensational form and really starting to gather some strong momentum leading up to the Nationals in Sydney in a few weeks.

All at the club should be justifiably proud of these two stellar performances. Well done to Luke & Sam.

Also in action at the Miler’s Club meet was:

Mile (1609m)

Xavier Chapman (4:28.7)

Paris Street (4:43.6) Under 17, 18, 19 & 20 Club Record

Dino Imbriano (4:56.9) 40+ Club Record

Andrew Thomas (4:59.4)

Lincoln Mah (5:19.7)

Jeremy Moore (5:23.0)

800m

Steve Fabris (1:56.8) Massive PB!!

Will Lewis (1:58.1) PB

Nick O’Halloran (2:12.5)

Aaron Little (2:13.7)

Club Record for Dylan Johnson at Adelaide Track Classic, but at a cost

February 22, 2016 by Peter McGarry Leave a Comment

Triple Jumping sensation Dylan Johnson has added 20cm to his already formidable Open & Under 20 Triple Jump records in finishing 5th behind training partner Alwyn Jones at the Adelaide Track Classic on 20 February 2016. However, the record breaking effort has come at a cost, with a foot injury forcing Dylan to pass on his final 3 attempts.

The new record stands at 15.20m.

Subject to his foot recovering in time, Dylan is hoping to compete at the Victorian Championships this coming weekend, and failing this will compete at the AV Knockout Final, possibly the Brisbane Track Classic and then the National Championships in Sydney.

Also on show in Adelaide was Alex Rowe and Peter Bol in the 800m. Alex finished 4th in 1:48.39 with Peter finishing 8th in 1:49.19, taking 0.33sec from his 8th All-time fastest performance for SKAAC.

Briggs Athletics Classic – What a night!

February 14, 2016 by Peter McGarry Leave a Comment

What a night of racing for SKAAC athletes at the Briggs Athletics Classic in Hobart on 13 February 2016.

Luke Mathews has lowered his 1500m PB by over 3 seconds and in the process created a new Club Record of 3:37.31 in finishing a close second to training partner Ryan Gregson. The previous record was held by SKAAC legend and Life Member, Simon Lewin with 3:40.2. This run follows up Luke’s slashing win over 800m at the Hunter Classic two weeks ago and sets his season up beautifully.

In the 5000m Sam McEntee (13:42.78) won a close race in SKAAC’s second fastest all time performance at the distance and again shows a strong pointer toward his prospects heading toward the National Championships. Also claiming a slice of history was Jack Holden, stopping the clock in 14:42.36 to join the illustrious Top 10 SKAAC 5000m runners of all-time.

Under 14 Shield Final Wrap Up

February 7, 2016 by Peter McGarry Leave a Comment

Congratulations to the 8 boys who represented the club with such distinction on Saturday 6th February in the AV Shield Final at Lakeside Stadium finishing in 5th place in a very strong field.

The team didn’t get off to the greatest start with 6 gaps in the first 3 events (3000m, 200m Hurdles & High Jump) costing over 180 points and a real shot at a podium finish. However from that point onwards the boys performed brilliantly.

Despite the gaps in the 3000m, it didn’t stop Jett-Paris Bedelis running a slashing 11:53.54, and Joel Imbriano 12:35, both massive PB’s.

The Shot Put was also a good event for the lads, up against some massive competition with Andrew Mathieson extending his own club record to 8.63m and Thomas Scroggie 8.44m

Thomas Scroggie (19.14m) & Adam McGarry (16.30m) fought bravely in the hammer witnessing at close quarters a Victorian State Record (61.90m) by the Ringwood athlete.

The 800m racing was a highlight with 4 great runs Thomas Scroggie (2:23.18), Andrew Mathieson (2:26.07), Hugo Goodman (2:32.36) & Angus Down (2:44.59). Clearly, the pre-race warm-up and advice from SKAAC’s own National Record Holder Alex Rowe did the trick. A huge thanks to Alex for giving up his time to be a huge part of the day for the boys.

The 200m was also a great event for the team with Thomas Scroggie (28.42), Andrew Mathieson (29.74), Jay Cavedon (31.35) & Jett-Paris Bedelis (31.98) really getting the team up and going and shooting the team up 3 place on the scoreboard.

Joel Imbriano was awesome in the 1500m walk 11:47.32

In the Triple Jump Thomas Scroggie jumped 9.83m and Joel Imbriano 6.43m

After a huge day, and at 7:15pm the boys in the 4×400 ran 4:36.06. (Andrew Mathieson, Angus Down, Jett-Paris Bedelis & Thomas Scroggie)

I thank all athletes who competed in this team during the season. I also thank the boys who had other sporting commitments on the in the morning for making the huge effort in hot conditions to represent yourselves and your club so well. Shield Finals are hard to make, and of all the teams that tried to make the Shield Final, you boys, the Under 14 team are the only ones to have achieved that, and you should be well proud, as I have been to act as team manager.

Final points were:

Western Athletics             782.5

Diamond Valley                 751

Ringwood                           605

Essendon                            578

St. Kevin’s                      452

Frankston                           422

Doncaster                          239

Ballarat                               212

Geelong                              191

Hunter Track Classic – Wrap Up

February 2, 2016 by Peter McGarry Leave a Comment

It what can only be described as an amazing night of racing for 4 of SKAAC’s best athletes at the Hunter Track Classic on 30th January 2016 resulted in:

  • 1 Club Record;
  • 2 First Place results;
  • 1 second place result;
  • 1 effort the club’s second fastest ever and another the 8th fastest all time over 800m in the same race.

Deluca Lawson-Matthew won the 400m in 48.07, a season’s best and an improvement in the SKAAC 6th All-time fastest that was held already by Deluca.

Sam McEntee staged an intriguing duel with training squad member Ryan Gregson to be just pipped on the line in the 3000m running 7:48.35, slicing 3.35 seconds from the previous club record held by Peter O’Donoghue (7:51.70 in 1993).

The 800m held great interest for the club with Luke Mathews and Peter Bol facing the starter. In a fantastic race Luke was able to pull away and win in most impressive fashion, stopping the clock at 1:46.35, a mere 0.35sec from an Olympic qualifier. Peter Bol ran a strong race, his first over 800m this season, running 1:49.52 and in doing so becoming only SKAAC’s 8th member to dip under 1:50.00 for 800m.

Please see the link below to the AthNSW vision of each of the 3 races featuring SKAAC athletes.
