AV Shield Round 5 – Program of events

November 8, 2016 by Peter McGarry Leave a Comment

Please see attached for a copy of the program for Round 5, which is to be held at Yarra Ranges (Mount Evelyn) Athletics track on 12 November 2016. Competition starts at 1:30pm on the track (Long Hurdles) and 1:00 for the big Hammer (>35m); & 1:30pm for the big Triple Jump (>12m) competitions.

Last year we had a club bus to get athletes up to the track, however, this year I unfortunately won’t be able to organise it as I have commitments on Saturday morning. If anyone is struggling to get to the track, please give me a call (0458 083 992) and I’m sure that we can sort it out.

What a weekend that was…6 All Schools medals and an Open 200m Club Record!!

November 8, 2016 by Peter McGarry Leave a Comment

With plenty of SKAAC Athletes at the All Schools over the last weekend and a special performance by Michael Romanin in Brisbane the season has got off to a flyer for SKAAC.

Firstly to Michael Romanin’s effort in Brisbane over 200m on Saturday in the Qld Club Championships. Simply BRILLIANT.

Michael won the race in a huge PB of 21.20sec (+2.0ms) which is the fastest ever by a SKAAC athlete, taking out Matthew Burmiester’s 21.0h (+3.0ms) effort from Arlington USA over 23 years ago. Michael is a super talent and super humble and has put together a really strong winter with his coach John Nicolosi and this year is shaping as a special season for Michael as he now finds himself inside the top 10 Australians over 200m in 2016.

AV Shield Round 4 – Individual brilliance, debuts galore, 9 Club Records & a very understanding wife

October 31, 2016 by Peter McGarry Leave a Comment

PERFECT conditions greeted the SKAAC contingent on Saturday 29th October 2016 at Nunawading, and didn’t the performances flow!

9 Club Records for the day, 8 debutants and a piece of individual brilliance from Alex Rowe, claiming a 1500m PB in a lone hand up front stopping the clock at 3:44.7 enough for 7th on the all-time list for SKAAC.

The 9 Club Records broken on the day were:-

  • Alessia Acquaro in the Women’s Under 13& 14, 100m (14.9s); 80m Hurdles 16.8s and Long Jump 3.51m
  • Daniel Doyle in the Under 14 100m 12.0s
  • Joel Imbriano in the Under 13 2000m Walk in 13:14.8
  • Mens 40+ 4x100m Relay (Peter McGarry, James Flinn, Andrew Thomas, Sandor Kazi) in 54.1s

It was also great to see so many athletes make their debuts for the club:-

  • Marcus Osman (11.6s 100m)
  • Alessia Acquaro (14.9s 100m, 16.8s 80m Hurdles, 3.51m Long Jump)
  • Matthew Kim (Long Jump 4.62m, 100m 12.1s, 400m 61.1s)
  • Ava Bennett (5:47.2s 1500m)
  • Isabelle Collins (5:10.4s 1500m)
  • Josh Collins (4:30.7 1500m)
  • Luca Di Conza (4:49.8 1500m, 65.2s 400m)
  • Steve Knuckey (49.8s 400m)

and also see some great athletes return to the club for their first runs in a while

  • Sandor Kazi (12.0s 100m)
  • Seb Purcell (49.6s 400m)
  • Will Lewis (4:14.3 1500m, 53.5s 400m)

Callum and Tristan Day waged a family battle in Heat 2 of the 1500m, with Callum (4:21.0) just edging out Tristan (4:21.7). Mum, Anne used the power of the on-line entry system to set the boys up a treat!!

Shaun Hargreaves cemented his spot in the 4×100 State Relays team with an 11.1sec effort in the 100m to be the fastest in mend Div 1.

An amazing 16 athletes faced the starter in the last event of the day, the 400m. A full field in Mens 1, Mens 40+ and 6 junior athletes rounding out a great day.

However, the person who sacrificed the most for the round was Janine Imbriano (wife of club legend Dino, and mum of rising star Joel) as she allowed Dino and Joel to compete on this day which was also her & Dino’s 16th wedding anniversary!! Thanks Janine…

We have a break now in Shield for 1 week, while the All Schools Championships are conducted next weekend.

Round 5 is to be held at the Mount Evelyn Track.

AV Shield Round 2 – Wrap Up

October 17, 2016 by Peter McGarry Leave a Comment

A windy day greeted the growing SKAAC contingent at Nunawading for Round 2 of AV Shield Competition.

Club records were again smashed with the following records broken:-

  • Lauren McGarry in the 1kg Discus with 22.01m good enough to take out every age group from Under 13 to Open;
  • Lauren McGarry in the 400g Javelin with 19.33 extending the Under 14 & 15 records at that weight;
  • Aaron Little in the Mens 40+ 400m running 58.48
  • 40+ Mens 4×100 (Andrew Thomas, Aaron Little, Peter McGarry, James Flinn) in 58.7s

Great also to see Gerard Kerr & Nick O’Halloran back racing after a frustrating couple of injury marred seasons getting a 400m in 54.11 and 1500m in 4:55.0 respectively.

Chris Milne posted a PB in the 1500m (4:35.11) and also a produced a solid 400m. (56.11)

The Mens 40+ team had a GREAT showing with only 6 gaps across the whole program. James Flinn set the discus circle alight with a 33.99m effort showing that even after nearly 30 years, class still shines through. The 40+ club record is in serious danger!

The Under 14 team of Joel & Jett-Paris were simply awesome in tough conditions. Joel’s highlights being (1500m 5:58.7; and two really important results for the team in the Discus & Javelin). Jett-Paris’ 400m (69.59) and 80m Hurdles 17.90 were two super strong runs.

“Team Lauren” in the Under 14 Women’s comp came second for the second week in a row. Lauren this week broke the all-ages 1kg discus records from Under 13 all the way to Open with 22.01m. Lauren also broke the Under 13 & 14 400g Javelin records achieving 19.33m.

Special mention to Nigel Self (100m 11.44m) who has kept the fires burning in Mens 1 for the second week in a row. Re-inforcements are on their way Nige!!

Ladders 9 (for the teams that have scored premiership point thus far)

Mens Div 1 – 3rd

Mens 40+ – 3rd

Mens Under 16 – 8th

Mens Under 14 – 3rd

Womens Under 14 – 2nd

AV Shield – Round 1 Wrap-up

October 12, 2016 by Peter McGarry Leave a Comment

Numbers were down, but spirits were high and the sun was shining for the opening round of AV Shield Competition.

We welcome club debutants James Flinn and Samuel Scroggie.

Mens Div 1

One man on his own – Nigel Self took on the role of being the team in Round 1, getting amongst the 200m, High Jump, 800m & Shot Put to great effect. Nigel is a huge addition to the club and to those that aren’t aware has numerous Country titles to his name and will be there when the whips are cracking for the Syd James trophy.

Mens 40+

Thommo, fear not, you’ll have plenty of support this season. Dino was everywhere as usual, getting out there in the Triple, Hammer, High Jump (after 26 years and at least one knee operation) 200m, 800, 5000m and 4×200. Jack Howard returning after a back complaint, picked up where he left off with the Hammer & Shot. James Flinn marked his strong debut with a 10.30m Shot Put and showed plenty in jumping 1.40m in the High Jump.

A little birdy told me that Aaron Little was flying and gee, they weren’t wrong, looking fit as a fiddle in the 800m, 5000m and the 4x200m Relay.

Great also to see Luke Goodman back running after an injury marred Cross Country season in the 5000m.

To cap off a successful day the 4x200m Relay team created (rather than broke :-)) a Club Record running 2:00.7 (Aaron Little, Dino Imbriano, James Flinn, Peter McGarry)

Mens Under 16

Tristan Day, fresh from a successful Cross Country Nationals and AGS season where he lowered his 3000m PB to 9:21 was our sole competitor in the age group and looked super comfortable in running 9:34 with very little competition pulling away in the last 600m for a commanding win. We all watch with great interest in Tristan’s progress this season!!

Mens Under 14

Until the APS finishes these early rounds are always tough, but that didn’t deter Adam, Jett-Paris, Joel and our debutant Samuel Scroggie who were everywhere. 2 hurdlers, 2 Triple Jumpers, 2 High Jumpers, 1 walker, 3 800m runners, 1 x 3000m runner, a 4x200m relay team, 1 hammer Thrower, 2 Shot Putters made for a great day for the lads, finishing 3rd behind improved Ringwood & Yarra Ranges teams. Re-inforcements will arrive soon lads!!

Mention to Adam for breaking his own Under 13 Club Hammer Throw record, lifting the mark to 19.44m. Well done Adam.

Womens Under 14

4 events and 4 Club Records for Lauren McGarry. Two of these records rank very highly in last years Shield Competition from an athlete that still has 3 seasons left at this level. Lauren’s 3kg Shot Put of 8.55 and her Hammer Throw (her first ever try at the event) of 19.28m would have both been enough for 5th in last years Under 14 Victorian Finals.

A great day of athletics with plenty more to come. Get registered for SKAAC and get amongst the fun.

Legends Day 2016 – what a great celebration of St. Kevin’s Athletics

September 26, 2016 by Peter McGarry Leave a Comment

What a wonderful morning of St. Kevin’s Athletics on Saturday 24th September 2016,where champions, past, present and future were all together to celebrate our great sport, capped off with a morning tea and photo presentations to each of the returning 2015 SKC Premiership team members. To have nearly 20 St. Kevin’s Athletics Legends in attendance shows the strong bond and respect between SKC & SKAAC. Athletics is a sport of numbers and here are some of them:-

1 Rio Olympian (Bol)

1 National Record Holder & World Championships Representative (Rowe)

3 Senior National Champions (Lewin; Rinaldi; Rowe)

9 SKC Athletics Captains in attendance (Travers 1978, McCann 2000, Fabris 2005, Hargreaves 2007, Weeks 2011, Bertacco 2012, Romanin 2014, Anderson 2015, Fry 2016)

3 Cross Country Captains in attendance (McCann 2000; Hibbert 2014; Bolton 2016)

8 APS Current or Past Record Holders (Lodge; Flinn; Bailey; Johnson; Romanin; Anderson; Jok; Fry)

32 school record holders, including a SKC record that has stood since 1973 (the Under 16 4×400 Relay, containing Sandy Lodge)

48 APS Wins from the Old Collegians present on the day

1 athlete that NEVER was beaten in APS Competition (5 years) and broke a record as an underage performer in 1984 in the Under 15 Shot Put (Flinn)

We received a most wonderful surprise with Les Plummer a competitor with SKAAC in 1952 joining us for the day. Below you can see a picture of Les in his club colours in 1952 (Les is in the top left back row position), and in the very next photo a picture with Conor Fry the 2016 SKC Captain of Athletics bookending the very reason why we were all here to celebrate in the first place. To honour the past and support the current!

160924_skaac_1952_team_photo160924_legends_day_plummer__fry

Brosie McCann spoke passionately about each of our Legends individually to a captivated SKC Athlete audience, about each Legend’s efforts both during their school and junior careers and also about the impact they have had on the sport since leaving school and competing with SKAAC.

This event has become a special day through the hard work of Brosie McCann and for that all at SKAAC offer our congratulations for such a wonderful celebration. Please see below for a photo of the Legends in attendance on the day. We look forward to the 2017 celebration with much anticipation.
