AV Shield Round 3 – Casey Fields

November 4, 2015 by Peter McGarry Leave a Comment

Shield Round 3 – Casey Fields

Thanks to all 25 St. Kevin’s Athletes for making the long trek out to Casey Fields for what was a very long day of athletics. Special thanks to the many parents who bought their children to the track rather than get a flying start to the long weekend and a huge well done to our debutants on the weekend…Jett-Paris Bedelis, Angus Down and Marcus Hope.

A super day for the club, with the Mens Div 1 team winning, Under 14 finishing second, Under 16 third and Under 18 fourth.

Mens Div 1

St. Kevin’s Mens Div 1 team had its first win in nearly 18 months on Saturday at Casey Fields. How did this happen? Easy to answer that one – team effort.

St. Kevin’s are blessed with not only some very talented athletes at present, but also athletes that are prepared to sacrifice all for the team. Take your pick of any of the following…

* Steve Fabris nearly shearing his leg off on a hurdle during the week in preparation for a go at the 3’6”, oh and plus our fastest 100m (11.45s) and 400m (50.66s)

* Gerry Sofianos at 66 years of age showing us how to get around the 2000m walk.

* Jason completing the 2k walk in under 9 mins and then backing up for a 1500m.

* Luke Goodman running a great 1500m helping Hugo to a new PB.

* Seb Purcell having his first race in over 2 years, getting through a 400m.

* Aaron Little driving for over an hour for a 1500m.

* Dan Martin getting back into it with a 100m and then a leg of the Relay.

* Shaun Hargreaves & Dan Bailey doing the ‘hamburger’ (i.e. “the lot”) 100m, 110m Hurdles, 400m, (Shaun leg of 4x100m, Bails the Pole Vault), Long Jump, Discus, Javelin, and 3k Steeple – between them they only missed the Walk!! Super effort by two of the club’s best ever, especially the 3k Steeple at nearly 7:00pm!

* Zach Nelson winning the Long Jump with 6.62m and then backing up for a 1500m.

* And lastly Steve Cain, won the 110m hurdles, covered the Discus, Javelin, Pole Vault, 100m, 400m, leg of 4x100m Relay. However, what a great club to be a part of, when the 5th placegetter in the Decathlon at Glasgow (our own Steve Cain) will lap score for Shaun & Bails in the 3k Steeple. Well folks, that is your club – the mighty St. Kevin’s Athletics Club.

Under 18

Conor Fry was at Casey Fields early, and gave us all the guidance that all was ok with the weather, despite some huge downpours early in the morning threatening the meet. However, Conor’s athletic ability more than matches his weather forecasting, with him clocking 50.93s for 400m and 15.84s for the 110m Hurdles. He is well set for All Schools this coming weekend.

Ned O’Brien had his first race over 1500m since his PB at the APS Sports and ran a really strong race to be just outside his PB in 4:26.42.

It was great to see the boys from Under 16 & Under 18 combine for a relay team with a novelty theme initially, but then surprise themselves that they narrowly missed winning their heat. At the risk of making enemies within the distance fraternity, Ned O’Brien showed plenty in the 3rd leg of the 4x100m Relay!!

Under 16

This team is building steadily.

Harry Livens got things rolling in hurdles (16.90), had a good Long Jump into the headwind (5.23m), and ran a PB in the 100m (12:35s).

Phil Borg was the fastest Under 16 for the day in the 100m (11.68s) and backed that up with a 5.55m Long Jump

Marcus Hope was fastest for SKAAC in the hurdles (15.27s) and must have run close to 25sec for the last 200m of the 1500m, stopping the clock at 4:53.83.

Massimo Acquaro stepped up into Heat 5 of the Mens 100m and ran a super race.

Tristan Day, planning to run the 3k at All Schools, was simply superb in the 1500m with a massive PB running 4:27.81.

Under 14

The Under 14 team was simply “PB City”

All 1500m runners ran PB’s…

Jett-Paris an 8 sec PB (5:27.3)

Tom Scroggie a 6 sec PB (4:44.67)

Hugo Goodman 4 sec PB (4:54.47)

Angus Down a PB stopping the clock at 5:10.93

Tom also finished the day with a rush, 2000m Steeple in 7:34.5, 400m in 65.39s and 22.02m Discus

There is no Shield Competition this weekend with the All Schools scheduled for Lakeside Stadium. Shield will resume on 14 November from 1:00pm at Nunawading. All the best to the many athletics that are competing at the All Schools Championships this weekend.

APS Athletics Report 17 October 2015 – SKC 5-in-a-row

October 26, 2015 by Peter McGarry Leave a Comment

APS Athletics Championship 2015 (October 17th)

The headlines will read St. Kevin’s win the APS Athletics Premiership, SKC make it 5 in a row, 8 is great for SKC Aths! These tell only a small part of the greatness achieved on Saturday 17th October 2015.

The bullet points highlights would read:

  • Record 21 out of 23 A Grade Finals on Heats Day.
  • SKC 2nd Highest Point Total 461.5 (best 463.5 in 2013)
  • Record 93.5 point win over second place Xavier College
  • APS Record Open 4x400m Relay 3.19.64 (previous best 3.22.01)
  • SKC Equal Record 12 APS Winning events, including: (SKAAC Clubman) Phillip Borg U-16 100m and 200m, (SKAAC Clubman) Will Lewis U-16 1500m, (SKAAC Clubman) Max Gray U-17 High Jump, (SKAAC Clubman) Harry Livens U-15 Triple Jump, Jack Anderson Open 400m and 800m, Jack Mahony U-14 100m and 800m, Murray Griffin, Daniel Doyle, James Hill, and Jack Mahony U-14 4 x 100m Relay, Campbell Smart, Sam Forbes, Owen Rush and Phillip Borg U-16 4 x 100m, (SKAAC Clubman) Conor Fry, Ryan Losty, Jack Anderson and Tuth Jok Open 4 x 400m.

In needs to be noted that each of these winners has an amazing story to tell, the most common aspect of them all is that each athlete started their SKC athletic career not as winners, some not in A grade and others not even in the team. Each has worked to develop themselves and strive for continued improvement.

Special mention to the SKC Captain Jack Anderson. His efforts on the day were outstanding, winning the first event of the day the Open 800m in a PB 1.55.11, then backing up to run two sub 50 second 400m to win the Open 400m and then 4x400m. The historians are still searching through the record books but it is believed that this is the first time the Open 800/400 has been achieved by any athlete in the 110 year history of the APS Athletics!

However the winning of a single event does not make a premiership side. Rather it is the size, dedication and desire of an entire athletics squad that wins schools a premiership. So the real story of how greatness was achieved by St. Kevin’s comes in the sheer number of students competing each and every week on the training track (including all through the holidays) and weekend competition. The student that worked to lift his performance and motivated his team mate to do the same is a premiership player. Which is why the premiership photo, that will sit proudly amongst the other great teams in the school pavilion, will record a team of over 75 athletes for the 53 contested events. They did not all win an event, some did not get to compete on the day but they all contributed and thus all finished the 2015 Premiership race as winners!

AV Shield Round 2 Results

What a fantastic day of athletics Round 2 provided for all at SKAAC.

We were greeted by a fantastic setting after over an hour travel time, at Mt. Evelyn on a fairly new track.

The highlight was clearly the 27 athletes that were present to represent SKAAC. Special mention to the athletes that made their debuts for the club

Massimo Acquaro, Chris Milne, Chris Hibbert, Daniel Martin and significantly two athletes from Loreto Mandeville, Alex Jago & Astrid Ratcliffe.

It was a “back to SKAAC” day in many regards with the return of Tamma and Shaun Hargreaves and the mood around the tent was something to behold.

Plenty of highlights on the track (see results & ladders attached), some notables…

  • Women Under 16 200m Astrid Ratcliffe 28.55 & Alex Jago 30.77

APS Athletics Championship Forecast (17th October)

October 16, 2015 by Peter McGarry Leave a Comment

The hopes of a 5th consecutive championship are alive in the squad. The boys are aware that there is still much work to do however with strong middle distance and field athletes the team is confident of producing a really good team score.

The competition will be held at Lakeside, starting at 1pm (the open 800m is the first event on the track) and will conclude at 5pm, trophy presentations are made after the last event.

All are welcome to attend the APS Athletics as there is no AV competition scheduled tomorrow – get down and support the mighty SKC.

APS Athletics Heats Day Results (14th October)

October 16, 2015 by Peter McGarry Leave a Comment

It was a record breaking heats day at Lakeside stadium for the boys in green, gold and blue. With 21 A-grade qualifications out of 23 races, the most in our college history. This year’s captain, Jack Anderson, lead from the front with win in the opening heat of the first event. Jack clocked 49.3 for the 400m in blustery conditions, the fastest of the meet. He would return later in the day to team up with T. Jok, R. Losty and clubman C. Fry, to again run under 50secs for his leg in the Open 400m relay, qualifying them for A grade and setting a new school record in the process.

The SKC junior sprinters had a big heats schedule but clubman and defending champion Phillip Borg was up to the challenge qualifying for A grade in the 100, 200 and 100 relay; he has also added the long jump to his busy Saturday this year! M. Acquaro “the Williamstown WIZ” was brilliant on Wednesday gaining A grade qualifiers in all sprint events (100,200, 100 and 400 Relay), the most for the team.

The hurdles proved a real strength for the team with all students holding their nerve over the sticks. Including clubmen M. Hope, D. Workman and C. Fry. This proved a point of difference over our closest rivals.

It was good to see the continued rival of our 400m relay teams, with the school searching for their first win in an APS Championship 400m relay since 1989. Strong results from the under 16, 17 and Open teams keeps our hopes alive of breaking that drought.
